Michael Jonson graduated from the University of Washington with a BA in Business Administration in 1970, and obtained his J.D. from Gonzaga Law School in 1974. He practices in the areas of transportation, utilities, state and local taxation, private club, real estate and business law. He is the co-author of the chapter on public utility tax in the Washington State Bar Association State and Local Tax Deskbook and is a frequent speaker on State and local taxation of motor carriers. He is an avid golfer and donates a significant amount of time to local amateur golf.

Mike concentrates on the firm’s core client groups—real estate, trucking, utilities and private clubs, performing a wide range of transactions and dispute resolution tasks. Some of these legal tasks include:

  • Administrative litigation regarding various tax issues affecting trucking

  • Defense of Department of Revenue assessments in excess of $1,000,000 involving sales tax, use tax, public utility tax and interstate commerce issues
  • Negotiation of rule with major city regarding apportionment of trucking revenue for tax purposes
  • Defense of IFTA (fuel tax) and IRP (licensing) audits and assessments
  • Formation and structuring of water and sewer ULID’s and developer extensions, and representation in related disputes
  • Site acquisitions for major utility facilities and construction contracts
  • Administrative appeal and litigation regarding the extension of a regional sewer interceptor
  • Representation of a developer in negotiations regarding reimbursement for a regional water main and capital changes for a large development
  • Representation and drafting legislation for special purpose districts
  • Redrafting numerous private club bylaws
  • Extensive representation and litigation regarding the state taxation of private clubs
  • Defense of action against a private club by its members
  • Litigation on behalf of group of golf clubs involving reduction of real estate taxes
  • Defense of claim by club member for violation of discrimination laws
  • Negotiation of employment contracts and consultation regarding employment related claims
